Seven Card Rummy

I was teaching my kids seven card Rummy recently. For those who don’t know the game, the first to obtain four-of-a-kind and three-of-a-kind, wins. As we played our first game, my 12 year old son grew frustrated. Each turn thwarted his strategy as he saw cards he wanted come and go. “This game is ridiculous, I have to constantly change my strategy” he exclaimed and wanted to walk away. My daughter and I explained that we are going through the exact experience. We too had to change strategies constantly. That was part of the game. We went back and forth and he decided to see the game through. It was his turn and his very next card gave him Rummy. He was one card away from Rummy and he would not have known it had he walked away. He won.

Sometimes you have to pivot and change your strategy. Sometimes you may be one move away from winning. But you would never know it if you quit.
